Experience our interactive exhibits for all ages—paired with the Central Coast’s only planetarium—on 17 acres of oak woodland along Mission Creek. Learn about the Santa Barbara region’s unique and diverse natural history, and then go outside to explore nature in the Museum Backyard.

Sea Center Admission

Discover the wonders of ocean life at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center. Located on historic Stearns Wharf, this highly interactive marine education facility offers you close encounters with marine animals from the Santa Barbara Channel. In addition to permanent exhibits, the Sea Center hosts unique events and special educational programming, including the Live Dive series.

Coco Movie Night and Alebrije Museum Tour

Enjoy a special family night out, starting with a showing of the popular Disney/Pixar movie Coco. Then explore the Museum halls looking for alebrijes on a black light guided tour. Join in other activities including creating your own calavera (sugar skull) mask, nicho (altar frame), and more.

Astrophotography: Workshop for Beginners

Three-week class
Fridays: October 8, 15, and 22; 6:00–8:00 PM

Develop skills and techniques to photograph the vast universe under the night sky. Join Astronomy Department Manager, Javier Rivera, for a three-class series on Astrophotography for beginners or non-photographers interested in astronomy. Students will learn how to take photographs of the Moon, planets, galaxies and nebulae with and without a telescope and have the opportunity of using the Museum’s 20” observatory telescope.

We will discuss basic astronomy in the planetarium, and students will have hands-on experience using their cellphone and DSLR cameras to photograph night sky objects.

Each student is required to provide their own cellphone and DSLR cameras (Canon™ or Nikon™).
