Sea Center Admission

Discover the wonders of ocean life at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center. Located on historic Stearns Wharf, this highly interactive marine education facility offers you close encounters with marine animals from the Santa Barbara Channel. In addition to permanent exhibits, the Sea Center hosts unique events and special educational programming, including the Live Dive series.

Enjoy the Sea Center’s unique hands-on exhibits after the kids have all gone home!

Bring your friends or a date to get your hands wet touching friendly Swell Sharks, anemones, and sea stars. Go upstairs to be mesmerized by our Moon Jellies, Two-Spot Octopus, and Mantis Shrimp.

Enjoy breathtaking evening views of Santa Barbara’s coastline over a glass of Deep Sea wine and light nibbles from C’est Cheese (included with admission).

Birds of Autumn Eight-Week Class

Eight-week class
Mondays: September 23–November 11, 2019; 8:30–10:30 AM

Explore Santa Barbara County’s beaches, woodlands, parks, and preserves in this eight week field class with expert naturalist Rebecca Coulter. Participants will meet at a different location each session to study fall migration and its changing of the guard, as our summer migrants leave us for the south, while winter visitors arrive from the north.

Bring your binoculars and all your senses to explore the best birding hotspots of the region! This class is suitable for all birders, levels new to experienced.

Pre-registration required.

$75 Members, $85 non-members

Class schedule and birding meet-up locations will be sent via email after registration.

Field Trip: Art Inspired by Wine

Drink up the beauty while learning about viticulture and the winemaking process as you wine taste in the vineyard with expert Chris Coleman. Then create a leaf-printed reusable wine bag to take home with guidance from local artist Christine Brand from Nature + Pigment.

Enjoy exploring the best birding spots of the Santa Ynez Valley and learn the fundamentals of birding, including identification, life histories, habitats, and ecology. Birders of all levels can learn something from expert birder and wildlife biologist, Fred Emerson, (Ph.D. Cornell University).

Cocktails with a Curator: Saving the White Abalone

Following years of sharp decline in numbers caused by overharvesting, the White Abalone was the first marine invertebrate listed as endangered in the United States.

For more than a decade, the Sea Center has been part of a collaborative effort to reproduce the marine snail in captivity with the goal of increasing their numbers in the wild.

Learn first-hand how White Abalone are bred in captivity, what role the Sea Center plays in the White Abalone Restoration Consortium, and how SBMNH scientists and collections have contributed to the biological and anthropological knowledge on abalone.

Enjoy delicious seafood appetizers from Bluewater Grill, Uncorked, and chef Pete Clements. Wine provided by Buttonwood Farm Winery & Vineyard. Enjoy coastal-themed cocktails by Cutler’s Artisan Spirits. Create your own beautiful take-home craft.

Join biologist Tyler Haven on an outdoor survey of the marine animals and coastal habitats of the Santa Barbara region. Participants will learn about special adaptations these groups have developed to survive in the beautiful and diverse Santa Barbara Channel. Class includes fish dissections, kayaking, tide pool explorations, and more!

Coco Movie Night and Alebrije Museum Tour
